It is certainly true that there are fewer vegetarians who need to lose weight than regular omnivores. However, you do not need to be a vegetarian to lose weight and if you end up buying lots of highly processed “vegetarian” food you will not lose any weight.
Most people will benefit greatly by increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diets – even becoming vegetarian for a week or two. Not only will you lose weight, you will give your body a respite from the difficult task of digesting the modern foods.
Why is this?
Most foods that are available today bear little resemblance to the foods that were available in our grandparents day. They contain additives, such as colorings, flavorings, preservatives, humectants, emulsifiers, transfats and a range of other ingredients that have only been invented in the last 50 or so years. Our body knows what to do with natural foods but it is at a loss when it comes to these artificial substances.
A further disadvantage is that they are so processed that most vitamins, minerals and enzymes are either or destroyed or removed. Our body needs these for healthy growth.
A diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is easy for our body to digest. It provides vitamins, minerals and enzymes that help the body to break down the food and make use of it.
Of course, this does not mean that you can only eat salads. Cooked vegetables are fine and where they are cooked for a very short period (as, for example, in stir frying) or lightly steamed, they retain many of their beneficial elements.
Since they are not loaded with fats and sugars, vegetarian diets make it easy to maintain an ideal body weight. The vegetables contain a lot of fiber which helps you to feel full and also passes through the digestive passage very easily. I know of no vegetarians who are constipated!
Fresh fruit and vegetables also contain a lot of water. This is important in helping to prevent dehydration.
Personally I could never be a vegetarian as I like my lamb and steaks too much but in recent years I have hugely reduced the amount of meat I eat and radically increased the quantity of fresh fruit and vegetables in my diet. The result has been a reduction in weight simply from a few dietary changes. (Now if I could just eliminate chocolate and red wine…)
I have also discovered that vegetables can be very tasty when they have not had the living daylights boiled out of them and I think this is the reason most people are reluctant to try a vegetarian diet. They have the idea that it will all be too bland and tasteless.
With a little imagination and the help of a few good recipes, vegetarian meals can be simply scrumptious. And if you try recipes from a range of different ethnic backgrounds you will be amazed at how good the different dishes can taste.
One of the side benefits I have found is that after a vegetarian meal I usually have some fruit and this has eliminated the sugar craving I would often get after a meal.
There are some very good recipes and ideas for vegetarian meals that will greatly assist in your weight loss efforts. Often all you need is a simple meal plan that you can follow to get you started. it can save you a lot of time and effort and once you have tried it you can then develop your own specialties and lose weight at the same time.
